IGNORANTLY WICKED

Bible In One Year-Day 265 (Sunday, September 22, 2013)

Commentary: Psalms36-40. People could be doing bad things without knowing it. They might have regarded it as part of life. The psalmist talked about this in chapter36:1-4. NLT Study Bible wrote the passage this way;

Psalm36:1-4 “Sin whispers to the wicked within their hearts. They have no fear of God at all. In their blind conceit, they cannot see how wicked they really are. Everything they say is crooked and deceitful. They refused to act wisely or do good. They lie awake at night, hatching sinful plots. Their actions are never good. They make no attempt to turn from evil.”

Wickedness can be lurked up in a person’s heart, yet will not know it. Such becomes terrors to people. Though they may be enjoying the faithfulness of God, just like the righteous ones, chapter37:1-2 enjoins us not to worry or envy them because they shall soon wither like the grass.

Psalms 37:1 “Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity. For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb.”

It is good to pray for the Lord to shine His light into our hearts to reveal any form of wickedness that we have taken as an assignment without knowing. The devil can succeed in this area if we don’t daily search our hearts. The psalmist prayed in chapter139:23-24 for God to help him.

Psalms 139:23-24 Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”

There is a fact we must know; wickedness is part of the natural being of man. Only the light of God can expose it and the grace of God can defeat it.

MLB Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things and utterly corrupt (wicked); who can know it? I the Lord search the heart and test the inner self to give to everyone according to his ways, in accordance with the fruit of his actions.”

Without His Spirit we shall continue to fulfill the lust of the flesh which is wickedness and corruption. But by His Spirit we will not fulfill the lust of the flesh. The lust of the flesh is wickedness to humanity and iniquity before God even though it seems good to the person.

The judgment of God on the wicked is not limited to his time on earth but extends to his descendants.

Psalms 37:28 For the LORD loveth judgment, and forsaketh not his saints; they are preserved for ever: but the seed of the wicked shall be cut off.”

If a man borrows and refuses to pay, this is wickedness; his descendants cannot escape it, they will pay unless they make restitution or obtain mercy from God. Some acts of the wicked according to our reading include:

  1. They have sympathy for sin.
  2. They are blind to acts of wickedness.
  3. Their actions are never good
  4. They abuse God’s faithfulness
  5. They pervert justice
  6. They plot against the godly
  7. They fire arrows to slander and kill the poor in heart.
  8. They borrow and never pay
  9. They never offer good counsel; rather, they aggravate conflicts.

10. They hate God’s laws and skillfully pervert it.

11. They are quite dishonest.

The righteous can only find rescue from the wicked with the Lord.

Psalms 37:39-40 But the salvation of the righteous is of the LORD: he is their strength in the time of trouble. And the LORD shall help them, and deliver them: he shall deliver them from the wicked, and save them, because they trust in him.”

Apostle Paul said we should examine ourselves

1 Corinthians 11:28 But let a man examine himself, …”

Let us seek for the old path where we could find rest. Let us listen to the trumpet’s sound, wherewith we could escape the calamity to come. Our reading for today is Psalms41-45. Keep the fire of burning and alive.
