Bible In One Year-Day 266 (Monday, September 23, 2013)

Commentary: Psalms41-45. The person after God’s heart is the one carrying out God’s desire; that is, care for the poor. This is the ministry of God, the Son. This is the person God blesses with true blessing.

Psalms 41:1 “Blessed is he that considereth the poor: …”

One of the greatest attributes of David was his CARING spirit. David was a very considerate personality; right from his youthful age to his kingship position, even to death. He feared the Lord and this was the basis of his relationships in life. Even in his fall, he still demonstrated the fear of the Lord. To care without any unholy motive behind it is to act God in peoples’ lives. God loves and honors the poor, but this is done through man. Therefore, God is searching for people to recruit for His ministry; the ministry of care, i.e. charity. There are three things that matters most in spiritual disposition, FAITH, HOPE and CHARITY. The highly esteemed amongst all is CHARITY which is AGAPE LOVE.

1 Corinthians 13:13 “And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.”

With faith, you receive from God. With hope, you have the ability or strength to wait patiently for God’s promise which we have received through faith. But charity is the demonstration of God’s love towards others. It is what you do with what you have received from God.

God did not promise that we shall not go through what others are going through, but the truth, according to what we have read in chapter41 is that He will see us through. The righteous can be sick. He will have enemies. He will be exposed to troubles and taste hardship and difficult times. Whatever it is, it is going to be an experience to such and not a woe as it is to the wicked.

Psalms 41:1 “Blessed is he that considereth the poor: the LORD will deliver him in time of trouble. The LORD will preserve him, and keep him alive; and he shall be blessed upon the earth: and thou wilt not deliver him unto the will of his enemies. The LORD will strengthen him upon the bed of languishing: thou wilt make all his bed in his sickness.”

However, there is one type of caring that has no blessing but pain in the heart. It is called UNPROFITABLE CARE. This type is that which is not driven by the Spirit of God but by the flesh for personal gain. The psalmist realized this.

Psalms 41:9 “Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me.”

Ahithophel was David’s dear friend and counselor. He showed care for David and this won David’s heart to the point that he hid no secret from Ahithophel. Unfortunately for David, he never knew that Ahithophel was doing all those things for his personal gain. When Ahithophel saw a potential gain elsewhere, he betrayed David.

2 Samuel 15:12 “And Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David’s counselor, from his city, even from Giloh, while he offered sacrifices. And the conspiracy was strong; for the people increased continually with Absalom.”

To show the kind of care that moves God and invokes His blessing, you need His grace. This grace is the leading of the indwelling Spirit of God. Jesus also talked about this grace by the Spirit to preach to the poor.

Luke 4:18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor (meek); he hath sent me to heal (bind up) the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,”

This is Christ’s ministry. We need the Holy Spirit in anything that has to do with God; otherwise we could be fulfilling the lust of the flesh even though it seems good logically. Only the Spirit of God can act the true and genuine LOVE (1Cor13) through us to care without looking back or expecting return. And this is what invokes God’s interest in you in every situation. This is Christ’s message to the candidates of the Kingdom.

Luke 14:12-15 “Then said he also to him that bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee. But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind: And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just. And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said to him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.”

What is the Spirit behind your giving?

Let us seek for the old path where we could find rest. Let us listen to the trumpet’s sound, wherewith we could escape the calamity to come. Our reading for today is Psalms46-50. Keep the fire of burning and alive.
