Bible In One Year-Day 268 (Thursday, September 25, 2014)
Commentary: Psalms51-55. The psalmist lamented his regrettable actions and realized that he needed God’s mercy for forgiveness and rebranding. He discovered rottenness and decay in his life due to sin. He realized the filthiness within him and hated his past deeds. He could smell blood in his hands and knew that nothing qualified him for the presence of God. The sin was so much that it could cast him away from God’s presence. And if he lost God’s presence, he would be cut off from God; a repetition of what happened in the Garden of Eden (spiritual death). He discovered the greatest truth; i.e. the urge to sin was part of him at conception (sinful nature of man).
Psalms 51:5 “Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.”
We are never exempted from this problem. Apostle Paul also realized this truth and he became miserable because he tried to be good but couldn’t due to this evil urge lurk up within his flesh.
Romans 7:23-24 “But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?”
This evil urge is the law in our members and is warring against our doing the perfect will of God in our minds; it is called the POWER OF SIN. This is different from the act of sins we commit. The act of sins we commit is as a result of the power of sin (inborn nature) in us. The difference is that we need deliverance from the power of sin while we need forgiveness for the act of sins. If the power of sin is broken, the act of sins will not manifest. There was only one sin committed in the Garden of Eden which broke the hedge and the poison of the old serpent was released into man (power of sin). This resulted into many sins (act of sins) outside of the Garden; murder, lying, hatred, etc, Gal5:19-21. In summary, the law of sin and death yields the fruit of the flesh which is called the works of the flesh. The law of the Spirit of life produces the fruit of the Spirit. We were born under the law of sin and death (Psa51:5) and we must fulfill it, whether we like it or not; IT IS THE LAW. To be free from this law, another law must be in place. This is the need to be BORN AGAIN, i.e. getting free from the inborn law into the law of the Spirit of life.
Romans 8:1-2 “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.”
A baby newly born is having that sinful nature and the body, though young, is dying gradually as it grows old; this is the law of death. When the Spirit comes in, He brings in life into the soul; this is the law of the Spirit of life that sets us free from the law of sin and death, otherwise, the soul is dying as well.
2 Corinthians 4:16 “For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.”
The Spirit brings the grace to overcome the power of sin. He breaks the yoke of sin and sets us at liberty (not sin anymore). By the indwelling of the Spirit, we have the fullness of God; God works in the Son and the Son in us as His Spirit through His word. You cannot separate the WORD from the Spirit.
John 6:63 “It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak to you, they are spirit, and they are life.”
The Holy Spirit uses the WORD to break the power of sin. The word has a cleansing power. The psalmist wanted the joy he used to have back. Therefore, he asked God for a new heart and steadfast (loyal and faithful) spirit; this is the house of the Holy Spirit.
Psalms 51:10-12 “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.”
Let us seek for the old path where we could find rest. Let us listen to the trumpet’s sound, wherewith we could escape the calamity to come. Our reading for today is Psalms56-60. Keep the fire of burning and alive.
