EXPERIENCE BEYOND THE GRAVE

Bible In One Year-Day 267 (Wednesday, September 24, 2014)

Commentary: Psalms46-50. In chapter46, the psalmist encouraged those in trouble with the consolation of hope and satisfaction in their situation for as long as they remain faithful to Him.

Psalms 46:3-5 “Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah. There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High. God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early.”

There are two types of problems confronting the psalmist from outside; the roaring waters and the fearfully shaking mountains. These two are outside of the city of God. He further talked about another type of water in form of river that flows in streams. We all know that rivers are usually quiet and gently flow into corners and cities around. Rivers are useful in satisfying the thirst of men. The psalmist says it brings joy and gladness to the city of God, a place of abode of the Most High. Water brings life into our soul. The roaring one tends to kill and destroy, while the quiet one is to give life.

This is the situation of man on earth. Man is faced with the rage of spirits which are out there to carry out Satan’s agenda of killing stealing and destroying. He is faced with spiritual and physical predicaments. The heart of man is where God fills. When we allow the inflow of the Holy Spirit in that heart, then there shall be quietness and gladness even in the face of fearful moments of our lives. This is the message of the Lord Jesus Christ.

John 7:37-39 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come to me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (But this spoke he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Spirit was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)”

But for this living rivers to flow, we need to genuinely make Jesus Christ our refuge and strength, then He will be our present help in trouble. He is the only one that can open the fountain of the waters of life to quench our thirst. Nothing replaces water in our body, therefore, nothing can take the place of the Holy Spirit in our lives for us to be satisfied. What we must yearn for is the continual infilling of the fullness of the Holy Spirit and not the vanities of this world as narrated in chapter49. In chapter49, the foolishness of men is revealed clearly. Both the rich and the poor will end up in the grave. Man could adore the grave of one better than the other, it is a display of the foolishness of man because they will both decay and death feed on them.

Psalms 49:10-12 For he seeth that wise men die, likewise the fool and the brutish person perish, and leave their wealth to others. Their inward thought is, that their houses shall continue for ever, and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands after their own names. Nevertheless man being in honour abideth not: he is like the beasts that perish.”

There is nothing that will go with anybody beyond the grave; wealth, beauty, fame, honor, etc shall be consumed by the power of the grave. Only those in Christ shall be redeemed from the power of the grave; the gathering of the saints (Psalm50:4-6).

Psalms 49:15 But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave: for he shall receive me.”

The Holy Spirit is the seal of the new covenant in Christ Jesus. Those who have Him are in covenant with God.

Psalms 50:4-6 He shall call to the heavens from above, and to the earth, that he may judge his people. Gather my saints together unto me; those that have made a covenant with me by sacrifice. And the heavens shall declare his righteousness: for God is judge himself.”

The concise and clear, necessary and needful, understanding is that there is an experience beyond the grave; good or bad. A taste of the good is what the rivers of living waters offer us here on earth. VANITY UPON VANITY ALL IS VANITY.

Let us seek for the old path where we could find rest. Let us listen to the trumpet’s sound, wherewith we could escape the calamity to come. Our reading for today is Psalms51-55. Keep the fire of burning and alive.
