Bible In One Year-Day 296 (Thursday, October 23, 2014)

Commentary: Isaiah29-32. The voice of WOE fell on the city of Ariel. The assignment of the voice was to cause serious distress on the city. God declared that He was going to supervise the troubles that would befall this city because of their hypocritical worship. This voice will call for surrounding nations to besiege it. The voice will even make their dreams to deceive them.

Isaiah 29:8 “It shall even be as when an hungry man dreameth, and, behold, he eateth; but he awaketh, and his soul is empty: or as when a thirsty man dreameth, and, behold, he drinketh; but he awaketh, and, behold, he is faint, and his soul hath appetite: so shall the multitude of all the nations be, that fight against mount Zion.”

The voice carried spiritual power that sent their prophets and seers to deep sleep. The voice called for judgment instead of blessings.

Hypocritical worship includes doing the things of God without God in it. It is for the heart to be far from God. It is to honor God with the lips and not the heart. It is to draw near to God with the mouth but the heart is far off in darkness. It is to preach what is not actually practiced. It is to try to use religious laws to please God. It is to fear God after the pattern of men, i.e. according to man’s teachings such as doctrinal restrictions; eat this and not eat that, wear this and don’t wear that, etc.

Isaiah 29:13 “Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:”

Beloved, what is identified as indecent as a Christian should not be stopped by any doctrinal law but by grace, i.e. by the power of the Holy Spirit. To expound this better, let us look at Isaiah29:24.

Isaiah 29:24 “They also that erred in spirit shall come to understanding, and they that murmured shall learn doctrine.”

Every unholy act is as a result of error in the spirit; a woman who lies has received a lying spirit. Verse 10 of Isa29 makes us to understand that a man can receive a spirit of deep sleep which is responsible for loss of spiritual sensitivity or alertness. Therefore, many things which are physically unimaginable actually take their roots in the error in the spirit. Since the problem is from the spirit, then it has to be dealt with spiritually and not by law. Though the law is good, but it is for the spiritually dead; only grace gives life and light to the spirit, Therefore, to deliver a woman with lying spirit, you need the power of the Holy Spirit. In this view, all sinful acts should be dealt with by the power of the Holy Spirit; this is deliverance. Once that root is destroyed, the urge to do the sinful acts dies out as well.

Romans 8:2 “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.”

This means that the man under the law of bondage (i.e. sin and death) needs to be set free by another law of deliverance (law of the kingdom of God which says “be free”). This was what Jesus made us to understand in Matt12.

Matthew 12:28 “But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come to you.”

If you now want to make somebody to worship God without deliverance from demonic spirit, that person’s worship becomes hypocritical and, of course, a sin before the Lord. Unfortunately, we have many false worshippers in the churches nowadays; they operate under another spirit which is not of God. These evil spirits can cause manifestations in the congregation and one will think God is in it. As a matter of fact, the spirits do not stop eloquent speeches. However, instead of promoting internal liberty, it leads into deeper bondages; troubled sleeps, dark and confusing dreams, etc. Anything spiritual that is to be done in the name of the Lord should be led by the Spirit of God, otherwise, it becomes sin before the Lord and this is what summons the voice of WOE from heaven. God cannot identify Himself with darkness.

Isaiah 30:1-2 “Woe to the rebellious children, saith the LORD, that take counsel, but not of me; and that cover with a covering, but not of my spirit, that they may add sin to sin: That walk to go down into Egypt, and have not asked at my mouth; to strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh, and to trust in the shadow of Egypt!”

The true worshippers are those who worship in the spirit and whose heart draws near to God. They are led by the Spirit into the presence of the Lord.

John 4:23 “But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.”

We are only complete by grace and not by the law of righteousness. Grace is the working of the Holy Spirit in us despite our frailty. Ask for more of grace.

Let us seek for the old path where we could find rest. Let us listen to the trumpet’s sound, wherewith we could escape the calamity to come. Our reading for today is Isaiah33-36. Keep the fire of burning and alive.
