Bible In One Year-Day 275 (Thursday, October 02, 2014)
Commentary: Psalms86-90. For the fact that God answered your prayers, it means you have been honored by Him. Honor, riches and good life are the things that only God can bestow on man. But to obtain these from Him, we need to approach Him in humility of the heart. In most references to humility in the scripture, honor is also mentioned. This means that humility is an indispensable factor to receiving divine honor.
Proverbs 22:4 “By humility and the fear of the LORD are riches, and honour, and life.”
Humility is an under garment upon which God puts His garment of honor. We go through the difficult things of life; it is grace that strengthens the heart to overcome. Grace is offered to the humble.
1 Peter 5:5 “Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves to the elder. Yes, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.”
With pride, one can receive nothing from God. The psalmist prayed with this understanding to God in chapter 86;
Psalms 86:1 “Bow down thine ear, O LORD, hear me: for I am poor and needy.”
He humbled himself before praising the Lord. After which he tendered his case before the Lord.
Humility is not gentleness in appearance, but that of the spirit. Gentleness in appearance could be an act of satisfying the flesh. A man who wants to win the heart of a woman could pretend to be nice and gentle.
Colossians 2:23 “Which things have indeed a show of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body; not in any honor to the satisfying of the flesh (i.e. man’s evil desires).”
Humility is a thing that is desired to be resident in the soul of man, i.e. the heart. It is not the pious self denial which translate into bodily discipline (which is good), but coming to the full knowledge of God and realizing how miserable you are just as Apostle expressed in Rom7:24. It is the submission of your weakness to God for help. Many who appear to be descent in appearance, especially in dressing codes in churches and outside, are mostly satisfying the flesh because they are puffed up by the mind of the flesh thereby regarding themselves as holier than others; this is not humility of the heart. Apostle Peter preached it as;
1 Peter 3:3 “Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek (o.e. gentle) and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.”
The best human virtue that is highly esteemed is HUMILITY; it is the beauty of the person of the heart. A show of humility by satisfying the flesh is not humility but a seduction into error. If self denial and bodily discipline are to help you grow in Christ, then, the motive is right. When you approach God with this type of motive, He will fill you with His virtue that will earn you honor, riches and life.
In 2Chronicles7:14, God demanded humility before healing and restoration. The parables of Jesus Christ in Luke 18 all point towards humility. When God sees a humble heart, He stands to honor such. Therefore, the motive behind you prayers to God matters. Humility is, therefore, brokenness of heart before the Lord.
Psalms 34:18 “The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”
Psalms 51:17 “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.”
Isaiah 57:15 “For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.”
Isaiah 66:2 “For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith the LORD: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.”
How do we receive this grace of humility? It is by constantly and on daily basis allowing the word of God to renew the heart. Then the Holy Spirit will begin to do His work within us through the word. The more you yield to the work of the Holy Spirit within you the more the beauty and glory of the word is revealed as honor, riches and life. The first sign of positive response from God you will notice, as the psalmist requested, is that you will receive help and comfort in your spirit as you go through the problems of life.
Psalms 86:17 “Shew me a token for good; that they which hate me may see it, and be ashamed: because thou, LORD, hast holpen me, and comforted me.”
It is a great honor to be comforted by God’s Spirit.
Let us seek for the old path where we could find rest. Let us listen to the trumpet’s sound, wherewith we could escape the calamity to come. Our reading for today is Psalms91-95. Keep the fire of burning and alive.
