Bible In One Year-Day 172 (Saturday, June 21, 2014)
Commentary: 2Chronicles25-27. Amaziah became king after his father, Joash, was assassinated. The first job he did on resuming duty was to take revenge on those who killed his father. His life followed the trend of his ancestors; started well with the Lord but ended without Him. He went to war and brought the gods of his enemies that couldn’t rescue the enemy and he was worshipping it. I couldn’t imagine such bewitchment. But the truth is that there was an evil power in his father’s house that caused him to do that. God, in his infinite mercy still sent a prophet to warn him, but he scolded the prophet.;
2 Chronicles 25:14-15 “Now it came to pass, after that Amaziah was come from the slaughter of the Edomites, that he brought the gods of the children of Seir, and set them up to be his gods, and bowed down himself before them, and burned incense unto them. Wherefore the anger of the LORD was kindled against Amaziah, and he sent unto him a prophet, which said unto him, Why hast thou sought after the gods of the people, which could not deliver their own people out of thine hand?”
Amaziah forsook the Lord that helped him in the first part of his reign and he lost his fame, the loyalty and confidence of his subjects and, of course, life;
2 Chronicles 25:27 “Now after the time that Amaziah did turn away from following the LORD they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem; and he fled to Lachish: but they sent to Lachish after him, and slew him there.”
This was the trend in the life of his son, Uzziah, who died of leprosy because his heart was lifted against the Lord after God exalted him.
Many follow this manner of behavior; their hearts become lifted up after elevation. Such was the heart of Lucifer. Many lose focus on God after promotion. Uzziah prospered exceedingly in the Lord to the point that people brought tributes to him;
2 Chronicles 26:8 “And the Ammonites gave gifts to Uzziah: and his name spread abroad even to the entering in of Egypt; for he strengthened himself exceedingly.”
Unfortunately, his end was not a testimony but a shame and ridicule.
Beloved, we need to learn from these kings and humble ourselves the higher we go. The devil is also a patient foe; he holds back for some times and watch for our hearts. We could realize that these kings overcame the devil in the first parts of their reign because they loved God and held unto His instructions. But on attaining the height of divine elevation, their hearts were harvested by the devil. One of the greatest weapons in the hand of Satan is promotion. If he sees that you pray hard and couldn’t stop you, he could be very patient with you to attain that exalted seat before striking. He played the prank on Jesus but he failed;
Matthew 4:8-11 “Again, the demon taketh him up upon an exceeding high mountain, and showeth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them,And saith to him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.Then saith Jesus to him, Be gone, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.Then the demon leaveth him, and behold, angels came and ministered to him.”
Your achievement in life should not be your focus; your focus, rather, should be God’s final marking. The best way to know if Satan is already working is when pride takes over. Without any contradiction, pride is the fire that lights the candle of anger; too big to be insulted, disregarded, called names or to talk about. In most cases, you see people who love to introduce themselves; this is pride. When you feel too big to be offended then pride has taken over. Pride is self-decoration and it so does it that it looks very beautiful to the carrier; he or she is always right and always on the defensive side. Such corrects others but never wanted to be corrected; this is pride. The devil’s mission is for people to rise so high that the fall would be so resounding. Dear readers of the scripture, the more you realize God’s grace in your life the more you have to pray for humbleness of heart. You need to cry to God to renew your corrupted soul. This was David’s cry.
Psalms 51:10 “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.” He wanted God’s help because he knew he had a corrupted soul. The Psalmist further declared to the Lord;
Psalms 139:23-24 “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”
Let us learn to guide our hearts more when we start receiving the result of our hearts desires.
Let us seek for the old path where we could find rest. Let us listen to the trumpet’s sound, wherewith we could escape the calamity to come. Our reading for today is 2Chronicles28-30. Keep the fire burning and alive.
