GOING ASTRAY

Bible In One Year-Day 195 (Sunday, July 14, 2013)

Commentary: Proverbs4-6. The relationship between God and us is likened to that between a father and the son. This is what chapter 4 emphasized. But it made us to understand that a father’s words and instruction must be in the heart, i.e. mixed up with the heart which in essence means the soul.

Proverbs 4:3-4 “For I was my father’s son, tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother. He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live.

The problem before now was that people believed that obeying the law was the basis of holiness. They disregarded retaining the word in the heart as the most important; observing and doing the word is what gives life. That was why that ruler in Luke 18:18 called Jesus “good Master” without knowing the meaning of being good. His believe was that since he was carrying out the Ten Commandments, he was good but the love (nature) of God was not in his heart. He lacked understanding. Not until the word of God finds a place in the heart there can’t be understanding.

Psalms 119:130 “The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.

Only Jesus could expound the scripture in our hearts;

Luke 24:44-45 “And he said to them, These are the words which I spoke to you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,

The Holy Spirit has been given to us to shed the light of the scriptures in our hearts. Therefore, we need to embrace His works in our lives. This is the only way we could be made holy unto the Lord. If we keep God’s word away from our heart, we are bound to go astray;

Proverbs 5:21-23 “For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he pondereth all his goings.  His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself, and he shall be holden with the cords of his sins. He shall die without instruction; and in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.

Let us seek for the old path where we could find rest. Let us listen to the trumpet’s sound, wherewith we could escape the calamity to come. Our reading for today is Proverbs7-9. Keep the fire burning and alive.
