Bible In One Year-Day 194 (Sunday, July 13, 2014)

Commentary: Proverbs1-3. To live a godly life in an ungodly world and to build strong character and morale in a depreciating, decadent and negatively influencing world, the book of proverbs must be read with the heart. It spans through all aspects of life and meets the need of all human age, gender and race. The flag in this book is WISDOM and the major instrument was King Solomon. Wisdom isn’t a talent but a gift of the Spirit of God. Solomon lacked it before he encountered God. The evidence of his encounter with God was WISDOM. Wisdom is a spiritual thing and comes from eternity. It represents God’s judgment and glory. Anyone who genuinely meets the Lord must carry something along as he or she leaves His presence that would stand as an evidence of that genuine encounter. The spiritual gifts in the New Testament were also found in the Old Testament except for the gift of tongues. That marks the evidence of God’s nature in us. Demons speak in tongues as experienced on deliverance ground. The difference is that it is to confuse and deceive while that which is from the Holy Spirit caries power and fire. The one by demon entertains but that from God shakes the kingdom of darkness to the root and turns the believer to unquenchable flames of fire;

Acts 2:3-4 “And there appeared to them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”

The Holy Spirit gives gifts as He wills. His presence in Solomon was in the form of wisdom. You need that gift which will make you relevant in life. To have such gift, you must love the Lord with the whole of your heart. To love the Lord is to keep His commandment and do His will without compromise; this is sometimes referred to as the fear of the Lord.

Proverbs 1:7 “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.”

Solomon loved the Lord and did not want to offend Him; he carried the fear of God in his heart into the dream. Those who love Him are easily transformed from within.

Romans 8:28 “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”

One of the most profound demonstrations of wisdom is refusal to yield to sinners’ influences, i.e. resisting peer pressure;

Proverbs 1:10-15 “My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not. … My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path:”

Wisdom starts with a seed and grows gradually. You could find it grow only in those who love knowledge and choose the fear of God. There is a sound wisdom and another unsound wisdom. Sound wisdom is found in the mouth of the upright, but the unsound looks sound; it is not, rather, it flatters. And it is only those whose hearts are perverted that fall prey of it. Wisdom delivers from such mouths.

Proverbs 2:16-19 “To deliver thee from the strange woman, even from the stranger which flattereth with her words; … None that go unto her return again, neither take they hold of the paths of life.”

Wisdom discerns and judges rightly. To have wisdom is to keep biblical laws and principles; this gives life and peace.

Proverbs 3:1-2 “My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments:For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.”

Wisdom is to TRUST in God with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding, Prov3:5-8. Don’t be wise in your own eyes. Wisdom is to worship the Lord with your possessions. It is to embrace the Lord’s correction. We need to seek wisdom diligently.

Bible In One Year-Day 193 (Saturday, July 12, 2014)

Commentary: Malachi1-4. Prophet Malachi was one of the prophets in the days of Nehemiah. In his time, the Temple had been rebuilt but run by promiscuous, deceitful, wicked and corrupt power-brokers, i.e. the priests and the Levites. They led the people more into sin and worshipping God was short of the requirements.

Malachi 2:8 “But ye are departed out of the way; ye have caused many to stumble at the law; ye have corrupted the covenant of Levi, saith the LORD of hosts.”

Malachi functioned as a Pastor, Prophet and a theologian to the people. His messages were directed at the atrocities within the people. They dishonored God with defiled sacrifices on the altar;

Malachi 1:13 “Ye said also, Behold, what a weariness is it! and ye have snuffed at it, saith the LORD of hosts; and ye brought that which was torn, and the lame, and the sick; thus ye brought an offering: should I accept this of your hand? saith the LORD.”

It was so bad that the word of God was not important to the people; they lived their own lives. They disregarded marriage institution and abhors God’s position in their social living.

Malachi 2:16 “For the LORD, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away (divorce): for one covereth violence with his garment, saith the LORD of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously.”

Many things went wrong which were hurting to God. The proud was being praised and the wicked went free with their atrocities. The righteous was being silenced. A lot gave up serving the Lord because of evil counsel and compromised the righteous path;

Malachi 3:14-15 “Ye have said, It is vain to serve God: and what profit is it that we have kept his ordinance, and that we have walked mournfully before the LORD of hosts?And now we call the proud happy; yea, they that work wickedness are set up; yea, they that tempt God are even delivered.”

The book of remembrance is only for those who remain steadfast in the way of the cross, Malachi3:16-18. There is reward for those who remain steadfast in the fear of the Lord;

Malachi 4:2-3 “But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall.And ye shall tread down the wicked; for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do this, saith the LORD of hosts.”

Unfortunately, the atrocities in the days of Malachi are prevalent now. Sorcerers, adulterers, perjurers, exploiters and haters have taken over the pulpits and are putting on collars (Mal3:5). The people are being led astray through wrong counsels and the kingdom suffers righteous living. Malachi ended his message with the prediction of an Elijah which Jesus confirmed in John The Baptist.

Malachi 4:5 “Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD:”

For more than 400 years, God kept silent until John the Baptist appeared to fulfill the prophecy of Prophet Malachi.

Matthew 11:13-15 “For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.And if ye will receive it, this is Elijah who was to come.He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.”

The book of Malachi is enough as a sound warning for us to check and consider our ways. The manner of worship today is becoming insincere and full of falsehood. It is so bad that ethical standard of God’s covenant is becoming alien to worshippers. The worship is as the flesh leads and not as the Spirit leads even if we say “the Holy Spirit says …” The move of the flesh is now the move of the Spirit. Sincere and genuine biblical counsels and standards are being sidetracked for the insincere. Politicians are the advisers of the collared and the collared leads the people into more captivity. We need to pray for revival.

Bible In One Year-Day 192 (Friday, July 11, 2014)

Commentary: Zechariah12-14. There are four messages of Zechariah in these chapters and they centered on the judgment, blessing, cleansing of the people and the future day of the Lord. In the messages, we read about what was to befall the nations that would fight Jerusalem because Jerusalem has been chosen as spiritual nerve center of worship.

The message partially prophesied the death of the Lord Jesus.

Zechariah 12:10 “And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.”

Zechariah 13:7 “Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, saith the LORD of hosts: smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered: and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones.”

Sin and Jesus Christ are the subjects of the Bible. If sin is removed, there will be no more Bible. Jesus came because sin entered the world;

1 John 3:8 “He that committeth sin is of the demon; for the demon sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the demon.”

To see Jesus in the scriptures, He needs to unlock our understanding. Through understanding, we could do His will and obey His commandments. Understanding helps us to meditate the word integrally.

Luke 24:44-45 “And he said to them, These are the words which I spoke to you, while I was yet with you, that all thing

s must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,”

Without the understanding of the scriptures, we go into error;

Matthew 22:29 “Jesus answered and said to them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.”

Believers who function in great faith and the power of God are those whose understandings have been opened by the Holy Spirit. The scripture tells us to get wisdom but in all our getting, we should get understanding. Understanding is absolutely important if we want to get deeper revelation of God. Jesus accused Nicodemus of his knowledge without understanding. Having the whole Bible in the head without understanding does not make you wise, but still blind. Knowing the history of the Bible does not make you know the truth without the understanding of it. You could be boastful of reading the Bible in one year, the question is “Do you have the understanding of what you have read?” To know the TRUTH is to have understanding of the knowledge you have and this is the beginning of deliverance.

John 8:32 “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

May the Lord open our understanding, in the name of Jesus.

Bible In One Year-Day 191 (Thursday, July 10, 2014)

Commentary: Zechariah9-11. These chapters actually contain the message of Zechariah to the people. In the message, God’s intention for their future was revealed and those who were still in Babylon were advised to come back to Jerusalem.

Zechariah 9:12 “Turn you (i.e. return or come back) to the strong hold, ye prisoners of hope: even today do I declare that I will render double unto thee;”

Though some past experiences were referenced in his message, but clearly they were to remind the people of God’s faithfulness. Some threats of judgment were in it but promises were not left out. God’s chastisement is to show His love for us; even in that chastisement, He is still faithful. He chastised the Judeans to restore them in a better form; God’s chastisement is to bring you back to the right path. He does not chastise to destroy or kill but to reform and transform.

Lam3:22-23 “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness” (ESV)

God showed His loving kindness to His people and protected them in their chastisement.

Psalms 78:38 “But he, being full of compassion, forgave their iniquity, and destroyed them not: yea, many a time turned he his anger away, and did not stir up all his wrath.”

God is Love and all about Him is the expression of His love, even, the troubles we go through in which it seems He is silent or unable to deliver. May His grace be sufficient for us in the name of Jesus.

Psalms 27:10 “When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take me up.”

When you sin against the Lord, do not run away from Him but run to Him; this was what made the difference between David and Saul. David knew the heart of God (love) but Saul was short of this because the light of God’s love could not reach his heart. Beloved, even in our difficult times, let us realize God’s faithfulness is unfailing; He cares for you.

Bible In One Year-Day 190 (Wednesday, July 09, 2014)

Commentary: Zech5-8. Zechariah saw three visions which were in parables, Zech5&6. In the first place, he did not understand either of them until the Angel of the Lord explained them to him. Dreams come in this manner. Lack of understanding of our dreams made a lot to lose the best of their lives and the knowledge of the will of God for their lives. In understanding our dreams we need the Holy Spirit for the interpretation. The first vision of Zechariah was about the flying scroll which contains two curses; one against the thief (Ex20:15) and the other against false swearing and using the name of God in vain (Ex20:7). These are terrible sins before the Lord. Stealing what belongs to others is like killing them, while using the name of God in vain is identifying God with Satan. The house where such violators live is not safe to live in, because the stones and the wood used in constructing it is cursed also. This could pose a problem to any tenant that eventually live in such a house.

Zechariah 5:4 “I will bring it forth, saith the LORD of hosts, and it shall enter into the house of the thief, and into the house of him that sweareth falsely by my name: and it shall remain in the midst of his house, and shall consume it with the timber thereof and the stones thereof.”

The actions under these curses were violations of the Ten Commandments. Sin is an act of wickedness against the Lord.

The second vision has to do with the basket of sin in which wickedness is covered up and is personated as a woman sitting in the basket. The basket was carried back to Shinar (Babylonia), where it came from. When you become born again, the first evidence of it is that sin becomes alien in your land. The people thought they could fast and mourn to cover up their sinful acts, but God corrected them.

Zechariah 7:5 “Speak unto all the people of the land, and to the priests, saying, When ye fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh month, even those seventy years, did ye at all fast unto me, even to me?”

God’s preference is obedience to His word. Fasting does not change Him, but should break the bands of wickedness and the power of sin.

Zechariah 7:7 “Should ye not hear the words which the LORD hath cried by the former prophets, when Jerusalem was inhabited and in prosperity, and the cities thereof round about her, when men inhabited the south and the plain?”

Obedience to the word of God brings Him into our words. Demons mock the disobedient Christians who pray in the name of Jesus. The delight of God is for us to have a wonderful relationship with human beings.

Zechariah 7:8-10 “And the word of the LORD came unto Zechariah, saying,Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, Execute true judgment, and shew mercy and compassions every man to his brother:And oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor the poor; and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart.”

God’s rules concerning the relationship between one another have not changed. He gave us His Holy Spirit to accomplish all that was difficult for man to achieve through the flesh. All you need to do is to be submissive to His leading and you will not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
