A SINGING SPIRIT

Bible In One Year-Day 288 (Tuesday, October 15, 2013)

Commentary: Psalms146-150. The Psalmist started the book of Psalms with the benefits of being principled in God. He, then, through the chapters narrated his ordeals in life. In these last five chapters, he praised the Lord and encourages us to do same at all times. In his word, he said nothing is as good as using your life to praise the Lord.

Psalms 146:1-2 Praise ye the LORD. Praise the LORD, O my soul. While I live will I praise the LORD: I will sing praises unto my God while I have any being.”

To have your ‘being’ is to have your spirit in the flesh. It is to have God’s breathe in you. It is for your flesh to still be in connection with life. It is for your spirit to be conscious of the divine. Once the spirit is separated from the flesh, a man ceases to exist on earth. As a result, all that the man has begins to decay to non-existence; even his plans. It is a pity that those who make plans for children unborn are ignorant of this fact. The only enduring investment a man can make is to make sure that the spirit of the children receives life. This is the message of the psalmist.

Psalms 146:3-5 Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help. His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts (i.e. plans) perish. Happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the LORD his God:”

The best a man could do for himself is to hope in God. The psalmist says “happy” is he who does this. To be happy in this sense is to have a SINGING SPIRIT. This singing spirit is not to stand before the congregation and lead in a powerful praise and worship, or special number. A singing spirit is that which;

  1. Know how good God is.
  2. Counts his blessings and name them one by one.
  3. Talks less of the problems but speaks more of God’s goodness.
  4. Sees the attributes of God and praise Him for that.
  5. He realizes that it is good to praise Him in every situation even if the situation is not in agreement with praises.

Psalms 147:1 Praise ye the LORD: for it is good to sing praises unto our God; for it is pleasant; and praise is comely.”

6. Appreciates the works of God in the universe.

7. Moves ahead despite all condemnations and distractions.

8. Learns through afflictions and difficult times.

9. Believe God for a joyous end.

10. Hopes in God through thick and thin.

11. Sees God’s hand through thick darkness of this world.

Psalmist conclusively realizes that THROUGH IT ALL God has been so good to him.

Psalms 150:1-6 Praise ye the LORD. Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament of his power. Praise him for his mighty acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness. Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp. Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs. Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high sounding cymbals. Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the LORD.”

The purpose of God’s breathe in you is to glorify Him through unceasing praises. A singing spirit is only for those who hope in God; such will definitely praise Him without being told to do so.

Psalms 42:5 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.”

May the Lord bless you with a SINGING SPIRIT, in the name of Jesus. Here we conclude the book of Psalms

Let us seek for the old path where we could find rest. Let us listen to the trumpet’s sound, wherewith we could escape the calamity to come. Our reading for today is Isaiah1-4. Keep the fire of burning and alive.

NOT OF WORKS

Bible In One Year-Day 287 (Monday, October 14, 2013)

Commentary: Psalm141-145. Every man born of a woman is a sinner before the Lord. No flesh is justified. Therefore, nothing in us is qualified to receive from God. We have no righteousness to ask from Him. The psalmist knew this and that was the reason for him to pray in the righteousness of God and not of his.

Psalms 143:1 Hear my prayer, O LORD, give ear to my supplications: in thy faithfulness answer me, and in thy righteousness. And enter not into judgment with thy servant: for in thy sight shall no man living be justified.”

The Psalmist made us understand that there is no man living on earth can be justified by his or her own input of good works or right doings; not even any religious belief. There is a standard that must be met before God which sin cannot make it possible. He is too righteous to behold sin. Therefore, because of His love towards us, He provided us (without asking Him) a standard of His righteousness to meet to be qualified to access Him and His abundance. He gave us the grace to be converted to His righteousness before we could even talk with Him. This grace is just for us to believe in His LOVE, which is Jesus Christ.

Romans 3:22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ to all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:”

When you receive Christ by faith you become justified before Him because God is no more seeing your sinfulness but Christ in you; a wonderful substitution.

2 Corinthians 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”

Therefore, rejecting Christ is a decision to remain condemned before God, and accepting Christ is a decision to be justified before God. The sinful actions we commit daily are not what condemned us before God but the root of these actions, i.e. our sinfulness. For instance, a dog barks because he is a dog. In the same manner, you sin because you are a sinner; you are obeying the law of sin and death within your flesh. But as soon as you accept Jesus, the law changes to the law of the Spirit of life in the Christ; hence you become God’s righteousness and not condemned.

Romans 8:1-2 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.”

You meet God’s standard of righteousness by faith in Christ Jesus to enjoy God’s faithfulness.

Remember, beloved, that your good works are not your righteousness but faith in Christ Jesus. Many say they harm no man, steal nothing, good to people, therefore, they are righteous; this not so, it is an error of faith. It is the Christ in you that God sees as the standard of His righteousness and not your good works. If you live by making a standard for yourself, you will reject Christ, whereas you must accept Him first before your good works are accepted.

Romans 10:3 For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves to the righteousness of God.”

Christ is the righteousness of God and not your good words. When you accept Him as your Lord and Savior, He first rescues you from darkness into light by putting a seal on you and then, if you remain faithful to His gracious rescue, He will anoint you for battle against the powers of darkness and for good works.

2 Timothy 2:19 Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.”

Any good work without God’s anointing is not counted as good before God and can easily be defeated by the devil. It cannot stand the test of time.

Acts 10:38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the demon; for God was with him.”

The Apostles obtained the righteousness of God through faith in the Christ Jesus.

2 Peter 1:1 Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:”

The law is good but cannot make you righteous; you must become God’s righteousness before you can righteously obey the law. And this can only be done through faith in Christ Jesus.

Galatians 2:16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.”

ENDURING MERCY

Bible In One Year-Day 286 (Sunday, October 13, 2013)

Commentary: Psalms136-140. From our reading of the book of Psalms so fat, we could see that the psalmist passed through difficult and hard times in different ways. Many times, he faced life threatening situations and it was as if God was not there. Take for instance what he thought within his heart in Psa77.

Psalms 77:6-9 I call to remembrance my song in the night: I commune with mine own heart: and my spirit made diligent search. Will the Lord cast off for ever? and will he be favourable no more? Is his mercy clean gone for ever? doth his promise fail for evermore? Hath God forgotten to be gracious? hath he in anger shut up his tender mercies?”

But reading through Psalm136, the benefit of what he went through is clearly and numerously mentioned; he discovered that God’s mercy endures forever. He talked about his past experiences and realized that God’s strength is manifested in our weaknesses and His mercy is revealed in situations where we do not deserve His countenance. Problems make us realize our weaknesses. Problems are furnaces to refine us for the quality in us to manifest; but to the glory of God. It is in problems that we get closer to God and, of course, get to know Him and His mightiness. The psalmist heard of the works of God in the past. But His experience made him know God in the real sense of it. The simple truth in what we read in Psalm136 is that since the mercy of God endures forever, your problems definitely have their expiry dates. Beloved, don’t give up for His enduring mercy shall see you through and His grace will give you strength. His enduring mercy heals, saves and delivers. His enduring mercy gives hope and future. His enduring mercy disciplines and corrects. His enduring mercy provides and protects. It makes way where there is no way. His enduring mercy fights for one and defends the weak. It remembers the person in affliction and delivers. It rescues. His enduring mercy created nature and can also change the rule of nature in favor of His children. Therefore, don’t forget to give thanks to Him always because His mercy endures forever.

Psalms 136:26 O give thanks unto the God of heaven: for his mercy endureth for ever.”

Let us seek for the old path where we could find rest. Let us listen to the trumpet’s sound, wherewith we could escape the calamity to come. Our reading for today is Psalms141-145. Keep the fire of burning and alive.

GODLY SATISFACTION

Bible In One Year-Day 285 (Saturday, October 12, 2013)

Commentary: Psalms131-135. Psalm131 is one of the shortest chapters in the Bible and its message is ‘satisfaction’

In his heart, he refused to be carried away with over ambition and pride of the world. His focus was God and only God. He even encouraged the nation of Israel to remain steadfastly hopeful in the Lord.

Psalms 131:1-3 LORD, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty: neither do I exercise myself in great matters, or in things too high for me. Surely I have behaved and quieted myself, as a child that is weaned of his mother: my soul is even as a weaned child. Let Israel hope in the LORD from henceforth and for ever.”

This is my encouragement to you also. He is ever faithful. People could talk and condemn your errors; don’t give up hope but trust in God for change, if you steadfastly cry to Him. Find satisfaction in no man but God; you will never be disappointed. Don’t pamper your weaknesses, but pray for grace to overcome them. When you see another person prosper in his own way, don’t envy or desire it, but thank God for him and desire more grace for His will; this is what leads to satisfaction in the soul. when you find godly satisfaction in the soul, the soul cannot be sick.

Let us seek for the old path where we could find rest. Let us listen to the trumpet’s sound, wherewith we could escape the calamity to come. Our reading for today is Psalms136-140. Keep the fire of burning and alive.

TESTIMONY OF ‘NO CONTENTION’

Bible In One Year-Day 284 (Friday, October 11, 2013

Commentary: Psalms126-130. Testimonies are of different levels. There are some in which you have to let people know about it, otherwise there will be no news of it. There are some in which you are counted just as one of them. And there are some that cannot be hidden; it announces itself and spreads like fire. Regarding this, God is in it, it is in His time and there is no argument whether it is God or not.

Isaiah 41:20 That they may see, and know, and consider, and understand together, that the hand of the LORD hath done this, and the Holy One of Israel hath created it.”

This is a testimony of ‘no contention’; though it goes with some pains and discomforts. The people of God experienced this in Psa126.

Psalms 126:1-3 When the LORD turned again the captivity of Zion, we were like them that dream. Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing: then said they among the heathen, The LORD hath done great things for them. The LORD hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad.”

The suffering of God’s people always ends in rejoicing. Their torments always end as values. Though people may mock them in their affliction, the same people will praise God in their exoneration. This is the testimony of God’s people. What people say in your affliction shouldn’t bother you. What you need is just for God to send His word to you; once  you receive His word, there will be dramatic change of situation that will put laughter in  your mouth. May the Lord bless your days with His mercy and your years with His glory, IJN.

Psalms 128:1-6 Blessed is every one that feareth the LORD; that walketh in his ways. For thou shalt eat the labour of thine hands: happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee. Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house: thy children like olive plants round about thy table. Behold, that thus shall the man be blessed that feareth the LORD. The LORD shall bless thee out of Zion: and thou shalt see the good of Jerusalem all the days of thy life. Yea, thou shalt see thy children’s children, and peace upon Israel.”

Let us seek for the old path where we could find rest. Let us listen to the trumpet’s sound, wherewith we could escape the calamity to come. Our reading for today is Psalms131-135. Keep the fire of burning and alive.
