Bible In One Year-Day 258 (Monday, September 15, 2014)

Commentary: Psalm1-5. The book of Psalms is a book of life experiences and prophecies. The first thing it addresses is the comparison between the righteous and the wicked. These two are matters of the heart and not of appearances. Since God deals with the heart, the issue of godliness and wickedness is a thing not hidden from Him; though men may be deceived, God cannot be deceived. Prophet Jeremiah described the state of the heart of man.

Jeremiah 17:9 “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”

This is not hidden from God. Everything is clearly opened to Him no matter how secret you keep it.

Psalms 1:6 “For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.”

When a man stands before God, the picture of his heart is clearly seen be God. God loves to dwell in our heart, but if filthiness fills it, He cannot stay. He communicates with us through our heart but if darkness overshadows it, it shields off the light of God. Without a pure heart we cannot receive His blessing.

Psalms 24:3-5 “Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD? or who shall stand in his holy place? He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully. He shall receive the blessing from the LORD, and righteousness from the God of his salvation.”

To be blessed before Him is to do a soul searching. The Psalmist cried to God for soul searching and for God to purge any iniquity that may hinder his being blessed.

Psalms 139:23 “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:”

We need to do this every night before going to bed so that the enemy will not take advantage over us whilst we sleep.

In chapter 2 we have the messianic prophecy of our Lord Jesus Christ. Chapter3 is about a life facing some trials, his confidence through it, his prayers and acknowledgement of God’s salvation.

Bible In One Year-Day 257 (Sunday, September 14, 2014)

Commentary: Job40-42. Job’s interaction with God in the last chapters is well informing. God threw some questions at Job. The questions indirectly were telling Job the things only God could do, Job40:8-13. God used terrible creatures as examples of His great work among creatures; the Hippopotamus and the Leviathan. Hippopotamus, the fearless animal that is not threatened by anything; yet only God can tame it. The animal rejoices at the rage of the rivers.

MLB Job 40:23 “When the waters of the stream become turbulent, he is not troubled; though the Jordan should rush against his mouth, he remains confident.”

Leviathan is the water dragon; the principality of the waters and the one in control of water spirits. No one can stand it; the size is regarded as graceful and enormous.

MLB Job 41:12 “I will not be silent concerning his limbs, his mighty strength and his artistic (comely and graceful) proportions.”

As far as Leviathan is concerned, man-made weapon of war is nothing.

Job 41:27-29 “He esteemeth iron as straw, and brass as rotten wood. The arrow cannot make him flee: slingstones are turned with him into stubble. Darts are counted as stubble: he laugheth at the shaking of a spear.”

He is a symbol of pride.

Expounding on God’s immeasurable wondrous work on earth brought fear into the life of Job. His reverence for God increased and he came to realize that he had made utterances short of understanding.

Job 42:2-3 “I know that thou canst do every thing, and that no thought (purpose) can be withholden from thee. Who is he that hideth counsel without knowledge? therefore have I uttered that I understood not; things too wonderful for me, which I knew not.”

When God teaches you, you need no one else to teach again. Apostle Paul, before his conversion, was taught by renown men like Gamaliel, yet without understanding. But on meeting with Christ, he was humbled because unusual light (understanding) came into his knowledge. He was taught by the revelation he received.

Galatians 1:11-12 “But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man. For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.”

The only thing that is true in any circumstance is that which the Spirit reveals; this is where we get the real understanding (truth). Well articulated message and eloquent speeches just like that presented by Job’s friend are not true if they are not revealed or taught by the Spirit of God.

Job came to realize that his trial was in line with God’s approval and agenda after God sat him down and taught him. He, therefore, repented everything he said out of ignorance.

Job 42:6 “Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.”

Unlike Job, the friends invoked the anger of the Lord because of their utterances. They made sentences with the wrong spirit.

Job 42:7 “And it was so, that after the LORD had spoken these words unto Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite, My wrath is kindled against thee, and against thy two friends: for ye have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job hath.”

The book of Job revealed to us a life TRIED, TESTED AND TESTIFIED. It started by a discussion between God and Satan over a particular life. It proceeds to trials of the life with the use of spiritual and physical things and ended in divine revelation of the truth of what the life was subjected to. In the book of Job, we learnt faithfulness, steadfastness and trust on the side of Job. For the friends, our lesson is to desist from wrong judgment and counseling. A man can be divinely condemned if he counsel or lead an innocent person astray.

Ordinarily, we might think that his life was full of losses considering the death of his children and all he had. On the contrary, his life was full of gains. Whatever God allows, He is in it. The children were not wasted but harvested unto God. Their flesh was destroyed, but since God allowed the destruction, He is able to save their souls.

Psalms 24:1 A Psalm of David. “The earth isthe LORD’S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.”

God is the goal of all lives. Where God is not made the goal, damnation and eternal destruction is the goal. The trials of a genuine child of God are not to destroy him but to refine him for purpose which is for God to be glorified.

Job 42:12-15 “So the LORD blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning: for he had fourteen thousand sheep, and six thousand camels, and a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand she asses. …And in all the land were no women found so fair as the daughters of Job: and their father gave them inheritance among their brethren.”

What men termed as loss was actually gain to God.

Philippians 1:21 “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”

The summary of the lessons in Job’s life is as follows:

MLB James 1:2-4 “Consider it complete joy, my brothers, when you become involved in all sorts of trials, well aware that the testing of your faith brings out steadfastness. But let steadfastness have full play, so that you may be completed and rounded out with no defects whatever.”

Bible In One Year-Day 256 (Saturday, September 13, 2014)

Commentary: Job37-39. It is true that God does marvelous and great things which human beings cannot understand according to Elihu.

Job 37:5 “God thundereth marvellously with his voice; great things doeth he, which we cannot comprehend.”

In chapter37, Elihu made statements that were so eloquent about the attributes of God. However, looking deeply into his words, we could see that, though a sort of praises for God, they are more of accusing God for Job’s predicament. The praises he gave to God were not in the spirit but of emotion (anger, Job32:2) and the flesh, by which we cannot please God. There is nothing done in the flesh that pleases God in doing His work. Elihu’s eloquent words displeased God because of lack of understanding and He responded for the first time.

Job 38:1 “Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said, Who is this that darkeneth (obscures, prevent light) counsel by words without knowledge (thoughtless, words without life,)?”

God’s words to Job were part of the wondrous things that man cannot comprehend even though they are familiar with them. The light in these words really shows the difference between what the Spirit says and that which man says. Elihu and company saw a problem and judged it by what they saw; they pointed fingers to God as the one behind it. But God made Job to see His loving-kindness, grace, love and mercy to mankind and other creatures and creations. God is not wicked. The lack of or limited understanding of man is the root of all problems. God’s lamentation is the lack of understanding of His (not the devil’s) people, Hosea4:6. This is responsible for wrong prayers or misdirected prayers. It is responsible for pointing of fingers to innocent beings. It is also responsible for wrong use of spiritual warfare weapons.

Peter, for example, in Matt26, used a wrong weapon for the right battle. Before then Jesus had told him to pray at a particular hour, he slept off. Prayer was necessary then but Peter chose sleep. When the authority came to arrest Jesus, Peter brought out his sword (a wrong weapon then) to cut off somebody’s ear. But because he did not have the understanding of what was happening, he wrongly used his weapon. Jesus made him to realize that the battle he was witnessing was part of purpose.

MLB Matthew 26:52 “Jesus then spoke to him, “Return your sword to its place, for all who draw the sword shall be destroyed by the sword. Or do you suppose I cannot appeal to My Father and at once He would provide Me with more than twelve legions of angels? How, then, will the Scriptures be fulfilled that it must happen this way?”

God is good and His mercy lasts forever. Nothing can separate us from His love. The battle you are fighting is to build the revelation and plan of God into you for as long as you remain steadfast in your walk with Him and faithful in your heart towards Him.

1 Peter 5:10 “But the God of all grace, who hath called us to his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect (equip you), stablish (stabilize), strengthen, settle (firmly establish) you.”

Job is a testimony to this passage. He passed through fire and walked in storm, God’s faithfulness remained with him.

Bible In One Year-Day 255 (Friday, September 12, 2014)

Commentary: Job34-36. Elihu was a new character that just came into the scene. By his statement he had been waiting and watching the elderly ones respond to Job. But when Job was done speaking in chapter31 and the friends couldn’t say anything again, Elihu became furious against Job because he refused to see things from their own point of view.

Job 32:1-2 “So these three men ceased to answer Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes. Then was kindled the wrath of Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the kindred of Ram: against Job was his wrath kindled, because he justified himself rather than God.”

Though the statements of Elihu through chapter37 were true when talking about the attributes of God, unfortunately, Elihu was ignorant of the reality of all his words. He spoke by his own spirit or heart but without the breath of God who gives understanding. He was not in compliance with what he said.

Job 32:8 “But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration (breath) of the Almighty giveth them understanding.”

The spirit or heart of man can speak without God’s inspiration, i.e. a word from the Lord. This is what God condemned in the book of Ezekiel.

Jeremiah 23:16 “Thus saith the LORD of hosts, Hearken not unto the words of the prophets that prophesy unto you: they make you vain: they speak a vision of their own heart, and not out of the mouth of the LORD.”

Elihu and his company spoke at length with Job but their speeches were without God’s inspiration. Advices could look good, but the question is if God is in it. That which God is in will come to reality and it will remain true. We could have the whole Bible passages in the head, but without God’s inspiration, it will be misapplied. It is true that whatsoever a man sows, so shall he reap. It is not the case here with Job’s predicament; the friends assumed it but they were wrong. It even became a sin for them to call the innocent Job as wicked. If we judge after the flesh we shall always be wrong, but if it is by the Spirit we cannot be wrong in any form because the Spirit is true.

John 8:15-16 “Ye judge after the flesh; I judge no man. And yet if I judge, my judgment is true: for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me.”

The only righteous judgment is that of the Holy Spirit. The flesh will profit nothing but bring rancor and strife.

Bible In One Year-Day 254 (Thursday, September 11, 2014)

Commentary: Job31-33. The integrity of Job wasn’t of outward appearance but of inward sincerity of the heart. The greatest influence on the heart is the eyes. If the eyes are lustful, the heart will be also. Job made a covenant with the eyes against unholy captures.

Job 31:1 “I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?”

He refused his heart to follow after his sight. He never walked by sight. When the eyes captures, the heart process it in thoughts. Job had a heart full of God and therefore could not afford to allow any defilement.

MLB Job 31:7 “If my step has strayed out of the way, or my thoughts have followed my eyes, or a stain sticks to my hands,”

We need to guard our heart for out it are the issues of life. If the eyes play harlotry, the heart will definitely depart from God and the leg leg cannot be held back after the heart has been defiled. God is more concerned about the heart.

Ezekiel 6:9 “And they that escape of you shall remember me among the nations whither they shall be carried captives, because I am broken with their whorish heart, which hath departed from me, and with their eyes, which go a whoring after their idols: and they shall lothe themselves for the evils which they have committed in all their abominations.”

Adultery is a great sin and the most powerful temptation to resist. It is a sin that is not committed spontaneously but that which has been thought over for quite a while in the laboratory of the heart. If it is not quickly aborted while in the heart, then carrying it out cannot be stopped; it will eventually happen. Jesus gave a clear process of adultery.

Matthew 5:27-28 “Ye have heard that it was said to them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: But I say to you, That whoever looketh on a woman to lust after her, hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.”

When it comes to this issue of adultery, the greatest means of resisting is to flee; don’t be confident enough to stay but FLEE. It is an evil that demands not standing there for a minute before taking off. This was Joseph’s secret. Unfortunately, Samson did not have this secret and the enemy truncated his anointing. Chapter31 of the book of Job is Job’s rounding up words with his friends and it is about Job’s integrity of the heart, innocence in attitude and his confidence in guarding against the horrible sinful influences. Great lessons to learn from Job.

1 Corinthians 10:6 “Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, …”
